Doddakannelli dust menace

June 25, 2014 By Neeraja Mohan

Dust, noise and pollution haunted a community in Doddakannelli off Sarjapur Road for over 6 months, until Manoj Singh, an aggrieved individual, posted a complaint on I Change My City.

A private construction company had laid a gravel road in the area, and was using it to ply various construction materials to building sites. The result was a dusty road and increased noise pollution, due to the number of trucks and lorries that passed every day. “The trucks would even come at 11:30 pm at night. The kids had a very hard time sleeping in the night due to noise,” said Manoj.

Dust kicked up by the vehicles would enter the surrounding houses and apartments, affecting the health of 200-odd families that live in the area.

“We can't even dry our clothes outside”, said Sumit, another troubled resident. “I have to keep the balcony doors and windows closed at all times.”

After strong protests by residents, some people from the construction company came and poured water on the road twice a day, but this wasn’t enough to alleviate the troubles of the community, as the road would dry up quickly and was unable to control the noise pollution.

It wasn’t until BBMP took up Manoj’s complaint and tarred the road, that the community could finally breath a sigh of relief. The trucks and lorries now pass without causing trouble, and there is considerably less dust in the air.

However, according to Manoj, there is still more work to be done.

“The mud and gravel needs to be cleaned up and we need speed breakers installed on the road as well”, said Manoj. He plans to post another complaint on I Change My City about this, as well as register a police complaint.
