Process to file a complaint against noise pollution

Any person troubled by noise pollution of any kind, loud music or industrial noise, can now register complaints over phone or in writing with the police station within the respective jurisdiction. Immediate action will be initiated against the offenders. It is best to talk to the neighbor before making an official complaint. Local law enforcement should usually only be called if the neighbor cannot be contacted or is not responsive to complaints.

1. First find out if the noise qualifies as a violation since each municipality has different guidelines on what is considered a noise violation.

2. Go to the respective police department to file the complaint. Ask them to give you the concerned forms to file the complaint. In case of a prolonged noise pollution then write a complaint letter in the format given below:

The Name & address of Police Station

Body of the letter should contain:

·         Type of violation

·         Name of noise source

·         Area

·         The number of days this violation has been witnessed

·         Mention readings if possible

·         Details of the instrument

·         Date, time and spot of taking reading

·         Decibel value of sound measured

 

Do remember:

·         The name of the person should be kept confidential.

·         Very often the Police Station nearest to you (as per the BBMP Ward Boundaries) may NOT be within the police jurisdiction where you need to report the offence. Knowing your local police station limits will save you valuable time and inconvenience.

 

3. In case of a Provide the source of the noise, the person responsible and what time of day the noise occurs. The department is going to use this information to investigate the matter.

4. Following your complaint the police department will investigate the matter and keep you updated on the outcome. Your complaint will be taken in as anonymous and your identity will not be revealed. The person is likely to face a fine for noise pollution.
